Aarden in de Polder at Casco Art Institute, UtrechtWith Aarden in de Polder (Rerooting in the Polder) Wapke’s long-standing engagement turns toward the Dutch landscape, offering particular attention to the distinctive form of the polders: flat, low-lying tracts of land (re)claimed from the sea, lakes, or rivers, made agriculturally productive and protected by dikes, and maintained through an intricate network of canals, pumping stations, and drainage systems. Wapke has spent several decades investigating the ecologies of land - its physical, mental, and social dimensions - by tapping into local knowledges and engaging with people and the everyday.

Ketika Gudskul Menjadi Ucuy

6-1024x768.jpg

In Search of the Inírida Flower

Deep within the heart of the Amazon rainforest, where nature and culture are inseparably linked, blooms the Inírida flower — a symbol of the territory’s richness and vitality. During the COP 16 summit in Cali, this exquisite bloom becomes a beacon of hope, carrying with it the voices and traditions of indigenous communities who have safeguarded these ecosystems for centuries. However, beneath its beauty lies a stark reality: the pressures of unchecked extraction and the urgent need to balance development with conservation.

What place can Dutch rural and more-than-human life be given within contemporary art amid growing demands for agricultural transition? We believe that good coexistence between humans and the more-than-human requires us to recognize how the economy is rooted in local cultures and (natural) environments. The work introduces the conceptual framework rural sociologist Inez Dekker and visual artist Wapke Feenstra developed together for this project as they journey through the Netherlands from autumn 2020 to spring 2024.

Provoke to think

The book that won’t be written Más Arte Más Acción (MAMA) has been reflecting on its past and future. We intended to write a book about it, but instead came up with a card game using some of the words, phrases and questions harvested from our many conversations. It seemed like a good way to open up our reflections to others, to move away from an introspective process towards sharing in a more open space.

Speech by Ade Darmawan (ruangrupa) in the Committee on Culture and Media, German Bundestag, July 6, 2022

Dear members of the Bundestag, my name is Ade Darmawan, and today I’m addressing you as part of ruangrupa. Let me start with a brief comment about history. In 1955, Arnold Bode established documenta in Kassel, Germany, to heal the wounds of the Second World War. A few months before, in that same year, a group of leaders collectively laid the ground for what would be known as the Non Aligned Movement, in Bandung, Indonesia, discussing a way forward independent from and built on the wounds of the colonial powers.

Pasang Surut: Edisi Khusus Vol. I – Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict – A Primer, Phyllis Bennis

Pasang Surut #8 (Edisi Khusus): Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict – A Primer, Phyllis Bennis Tongkrongan kali ini barangkali tongkrongan paling emosional sepanjang seri Pasang Surut.

The Fall and the Heart”.

Pasang-Surut #2: Perburuan, Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Speculative Collective (Board game)

What can cooperative board games teach us about art collectives? How do players set up common goals instead of competing with each other? Speculative Collective Board Game is a role-playing game for players to act as members of an art collective. The game provokes discussion about sharing resources, problem solving, and decision-making in art collectives. Bazo wrote an autobiographical story about the Hamar people and Gele made drawings of his pastoral childhood memories. Lumbung Press at documenta fifteen was happy to print the unique material! And voilà! A publication about Hamar through their own perspective! The Hamar currency is cattle and all land is free to be used by anyone. The book is also a complicated story of a conflict between strict customs and demands for change.
