Speech by Ade Darmawan (ruangrupa) in the Committee on Culture and Media, German Bundestag, July 6, 2022

Dear members of the Bundestag, my name is Ade Darmawan, and today I’m addressing you as part of ruangrupa. Let me start with a brief comment about history. In 1955, Arnold Bode established documenta in Kassel, Germany, to heal the wounds of the Second World War. A few months before, in that same year, a group of leaders collectively laid the ground for what would be known as the Non Aligned Movement, in Bandung, Indonesia, discussing a way forward independent from and built on the wounds of the colonial powers.

Coexisting “Coexisting” supported the shared and decentralised management of MAMA’s processes hand in hand with collectives from its ecosystem. Over the years MAMA has involved other cultural organisations through projects that have generated dialogues between three important territories in this region: Buenaventura (a major port city in the Pacific), Nuquí (small city in the North Pacific) and Quibdó (capital of Chocó). It was a pandemic relief project that allowed us the shared and decentralised management of our processes, hand in hand with the collectives Puerto Creativo, Tura Hip Hop, Yemayá Producciones, Fundación Mareia (Quibdó) and Colectivo de Comunicaciones En Puja (Nuquí).

Cosmovisions on Land and Entangled Futures

Logos-2-700x137.jpg
Collaborative Research Project Cosmovisions on Land and Entangled Futures is a collaborative research project that seeks to investigate land rights and the social and political agency of nature from non-extractivist perspectives. The project has an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on practices that reveal worldviews at the intersections between land rights and climate justice, questioning and opposing Euro-capital-centric and dominant narratives. Based on experimentation and collaboration, the project explores formats that challenge the hierarchical structures of production and presentation of knowledge, incorporating the voices of artists, collaboration and exchange in the development process.

Speculative Collective (Board game)

What can cooperative board games teach us about art collectives? How do players set up common goals instead of competing with each other? Speculative Collective Board Game is a role-playing game for players to act as members of an art collective. The game provokes discussion about sharing resources, problem solving, and decision-making in art collectives. Players roll the dice and respond to cards with prompts or questions about their personal and collective projects, while also coordinating with other players for completing missions.

Selamat siang para anggota parlemen Jerman, Saya Ade Darmawan, dan pada hari ini saya berdiri di sini sebagai perwakilan dari ruangrupa. July: Rural School of Economics in Kassel and elsewhere Our three spaces at Lumbung documenta in Kassel are in good use: the Drawing and Harvesting Room at Hafenstraße, the Rural Undercurrent Vending Machines at Hübner, and our mobile Plein-Air Kit. Drawing and trading are the two constants that weave together rural undercurrents and localrealities, and individual stories with collective histories. We keep harvesting and redistributing across the various ecosistems we are connected with.
