Mark and the Piano

When Project Art Works were approached about the Painted Piano project by the team at Hastings International Piano Competition we knew that Mark Lockton would enjoy the challenge.

Hastings International Piano is committed to artistic excellence while also enriching the local community through music. Through its Learning & Participation programme, the charity broadens access to the arts and supports local talent. This year, those aims come together in a new Painted Pianos project, with three community groups transforming upright pianos into colourful, playable artworks that will be installed in public spaces for everyone to enjoy during the Hastings International Piano Competition, 26 February to 7 March.

Mark Lockton is a multi-talented artist who works across a wide range of media. Mark is inspired by visiting exhibitions, family life and collaborating with other artists. Across his practice, Mark continually seeks new ways to create visual impact, whether through painting, drawing, weaving, collage or woodwork.

Mark says he loves the project and kept his design top secret till he had finished.

When completed the piano was moved to its new location at the The Court Yard in Hastings where it will be till 7 March.

The Court Yard on Hastings seafront has accessible access via the Source Park shop on the seafront.
