On the last day of this Majelis, we zoom into the practices of lumbung kios and lumbung.space as we map out different tools and structures that we are developing to sustain both working groups, and where they connect. The closing session of the assembly held at the end of the fellowship is the result of what have been done during the tool shed fellowship, but is not intended to be finished. Some of the results of the fellowship will be shared in any form (will be discussed further) but are also intended as seeds for follow-up to lumbung practices, especially lumbung.space and lumbung kios.

Picking up from the session on March 8, we go deeper into the practices and knowledges that make the collectivity of lumbung. This session will be voiced by the many different working groups, amongst them lumbung.space and lumbung kios.

During this session, we refer back to the initial questions that the working groups asked or where an answer to. To take the conversation beyond documenta fifteen, we ask how are the working groups working beyond documenta fifteen and why it is significant that they do? What kind of tools and structures do they use and how do they interlink? What are overlaps, synergies and differences? In short: how is continuity practiced and what is needed to maintain and to foster? How do we work around, through and with invisibilized structures of dominant logics? Which capacities do we (need to) have to envision and work towards other economic/digital imaginaries?

The opening session of this assembly is likened to a story to begin how the practice of lumbung began within the framework of documenta fifteen and continued after that; how lumbung as a noun is interpreted as a practice is covered in lumbung values: local anchor, humor, generosity, independence, transparency, sufficiency, and regeneration.

How is this carried out throughout the network and how does it resonate? What are the difficulties that are encountered in practicing these values, and what are attempts to navigate? How has the network changed, or adapted? During this day of gathering, we continue to attend to the lumbung values and how they are sounded out in many different ways. Where some practices may have been more dormant and silent, we see value in attending to silences as well.

lumbung member OFF-Biennale Budapest presents the RomaMoMA Street Festival. A workshop with Daniel Baker on the secret sign language of nomadic Roma people will be followed by a film screening and music by DJ Lazlorrobot.

RomaMoMA is a long-term collaborative project of lumbung member OFF-Biennale Budapest with the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC). It showcases artworks in relation to the idea, question, and (im)possibilities of a “RomaMoMA” (Roma Museum of Contemporary Art).

The exhibition presents the untold past and the unfolding present of Roma artists through their artworks and storytelling. Older and younger generations of artists and their differing artistic positions will be highlighted through an installation that both constructs and deconstructs the idea of a “RomaMoMA” as an imaginary, transnational space for the presentation of artworks. lumbung Kios pop-up market.

LUMBUNG FILM: AFTER CINEMA #1 A screening and performance program

Is the experience of the cinematic form an intimate or a collective one? Does a film stop with its last frame, or does it actually begin when the lights of the theater turn on? This event series provides a stage to encounter these questions on site and invites a group of writers, visual and sonic artists to perform, reflect, depict, present, and harvest the images, sounds, words, and moods which they have encountered after having watched a compilation of films from the lumbung Film archive.

The 93-minute film program, conceived by Azin Feizabadi, includes six fictional, documentary, poetic, essayistic, and experimental short films from the lumbung Film archive. The focus is on the extent to which going to the cinema is a collective experience and what happens after leaving the cinema.

Following the screening (the program will be repeated Friday through Sunday), varying performances by Setareh Shahbazi and Neda Saeedi (visual artists), Cat Woywod (sound and improvisation artist), Tanasgol Sabbagh (poet and spoken word performer), and Haytham El Wardany (writer) will be presented in response to this question.

PROGRAM ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2022 starting at 7.30 pm I Feel Nothing (8 min.) by Jumana Emil Abboud, UK, 2012 Leafcutter (27 min.) by Liam Morgan, Taiwan/Canada, 2022 Blindness of Love (2 min.) by Yazan Khalili, Palestine, 2013 Eleven Men (28 min.) by Nguyen Trinh Thi, Vietnam, 2018 Ensaio Ilú Obá de Min (2 min.) by Graziela Kunsch, Brazil, 2015 Have You Ever Killed a Bear? or Becoming Jamila (25 min.) by Marwa Arsanios, Lebanon, 2014 Language: Arabic and Vietnamese with English subtitles, total 93 min.

It’s a festival where contemporary culture exists alongside ancient tradition and international music stars play alongside fresh young talent. https://www.fondationfestivalsurleniger.org/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk-Cd234oNs&ab_channel=documentafifteen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOim023alOc&ab_channel=JoBoudry

Cinema Caravan Cinema Caravan started with the concept of “Playing with the Earth”, and it has become a bridge between cultures and people through its journeys. Founded in 2010 by members who created the first Zushi Beach Film Festival in Zushi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The group is formed by artists, musicians, painters, carpenters, cooks, and others from a variety of genres. While it works as a catalyst to revitalize the region through collaborations with local people and culture, it is also a collective that directs and creates spaces for art and film festivals. Cinema Caravan is in a sense both a project and a collective of people with these various aspects and characters. They continue to create a cycle in which they bring the experiences and connections we have cultivated back to our own local communities, develop them, and then return them to our destinations. The project started as a screening in the open air to create a place where people can feel with their five senses, prompted by various kinds of mediums, from video, food, music, art, to sports. It has evolved a medium to create expressions and shared experiences that go beyond the screen experience. https://cinema-caravan.com/en/about/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTaA_G5twTY&ab_channel=CINEMACARAVANTV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TryT9NWgqlA&ab_channel=CINEMACARAVANTV

Dr. Pepetual Mforbe: People Theatre: Journeying through Experiences of Critical Awareness and Consciousness-raising

This lecture explores the concept of People Theatre, concentrating on its impact on marginalised communities and individuals. The conceptualization of the theatre facilitator as a mediator between the workshop participants, the performance, and the audience is critical to the People Theatre process as it underscores the entire project of social transformation. People Theatre workshops that have taken place in communities in Cameroon and Germany demonstrated how the practice has made meaningful impact on conscientisation.

Dr. Paul Henri Souvenir Assako Assako: From the “art of places” to “the place of art”: decolonization of culture and development of a transcultural dialogue

In the Cameroonian artistic context, it strongly appears that the success of artistic education depends on two main levers: on the one hand, re-establishing the historical link of the endogenous artistic experience in current society and on the other hand, finding the modalities which lead art to fit into the vision of sustainable development to which contemporary society aspires. Our contribution consists in presenting some intuitions of practices which took these levers into account in the realization of some original artistic and cultural projects promoted by the private sector and international cooperation programs in Cameroon.

Images of defiance: South African anti-apartheid t-shirts

Speaker: Dr. Avi Sooful (Pretoria/South Africa)

Moderation: Lea Frauenknecht and Roberta Huldisch

Avi Sooful is a senior lecturer of Fine Art at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She serves as President of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts and current Chair to the Exploring Visual Cultures Project. In her research she considers visuals and experiences of the apartheid era a rich area for investigation and knowledge generation. As a practicing artist, the notion of landscape occupies her work as both political and feminist images.

Lecture: Images of defiance: South African anti-apartheid t-shirts

T-shirts became attire for the South Africa anti-apartheid masses during the 1980s as an interface of communication announcing resistance and protest. This lecture provides a reading of t-shirts worn by anti-apartheid activists that popularised political figures, slogans of protest and affiliations to banned political organisations. These t-shirts acted as an alternative platform and strategy of resistance believed to have the potential for political and social change similar to radio, newspapers and graffiti.

lumbung calling: Regeneration Saturday, October 2, 2021 2.30 pm (CET), 3.30 pm (IDT), 6.30 pm (KGT), 7.30 pm (WIB) In English with translation into International Sign

Guests: Arafat Sadallah, philosopher Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev, artists

Hosts: Jumana Emil Abboud, artist Mirwan Andan, Member of the Artistic Direction of documenta fifteen

The seven-part conversation series lumbung calling launches documenta fifteen’s Public Program, activated under the title Meydan. Each edition of the series is dedicated to one of the lumbung values: Local Anchor, Humor, Generosity, Independence, Transparency, Sufficiency, and Regeneration. The format dives deeper into the background of the artistic concept for documenta fifteen and illuminates the idea of lumbung from many different angles. Through conversations with a variety of guests, lumbung calling explores the rich meaning of lumbung across multiple disciplines, points of view, and contexts within an artistic framing. lumbung calling will take place on the first Saturday of every month, from April to October 2021.

The seventh edition of lumbung calling focuses on Regeneration. Within the framework of documenta fifteen, regeneration is explored as a way of living and organizing oneself and communities in opposition to extractive practices. This approach also includes generating time and space for mutual support and reflection. It centers care—often made invisible—as a vital part of political activism, enabling the incorporation of many viewpoints within a larger ecosystem.

This edition of lumbung calling imagines regeneration as an act of making kin with our predecessors and future generations. It also examines regeneration as a means of valuing material resources as something to be shared and reused rather than accumulated. Moroccan philosopher Arafat Sadallah looks at the conditions and legacies of revolutions, as well as intergenerational ties in his work with Siwa plateforme in Redeyef, Tunisia. Artists Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev address the afterlives of perestroika in the context of Kyrgyzstan and how young generations continue narratives of resistance and history-making while forming new ones.

CAMP notes on education is a glocal network of teachers and learners in the fields of arts, arts history, aesthetics, cultural policy and cultural education. CAMP uses the practice of lumbung as an opportunity to place the question of contemporary Arts Education in networked and global contexts. For example, what role does it play in relation to artistic and curatorial actors? How does it position itself in the current cultural policy discourse?

This session will consolidate various insights or the contribution of rural areas to development, and integrate the vision of the rural as a ’lumbung’ of local wisdom that holds a myriad of solutions to various problems in the world today.

Starting from the collective management of local resources, or sharing the knowledge about techniques for clothing, food, and shelter processing—these things have marked the practice or interaction between villages for centuries.

The discussion will also be expanded to include the experiences of four ‘lumbung members’ spread from all over the world. It is hoped that the expanded discussion can further enrich our shared insights regarding the many good practices that exist, challenges, and steps that need to be taken to realize the rural as a ‘lumbung’ of the world wisdom.

This symposium program is part of the Indonesia National Culture Week 2021 organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Mountains, turquoise lakes, and cows. Oh, the place to float your soul, hearing this we wanna go!

Berge, türkisfarbene Seen und Kühe. Oh, der Ort, an dem du deine Seele schweben lassen kannst, wenn wir das hören, wollen wir gehen!

Listening to music is a very enjoyable activity for me. My current involvement at RURUradio gives me the opportunity to hear so much music and it allows me to travel and understand different stories and cultures better. Out of a total of twenty: I included few songs that always bring me back to the great moments when I could still watch their amazing live performances. While the other are various songs that are often played on my music device. Pray that this storm will pass soon and that there will be more performances that we can truly experience physically, just as before

…”I made this mixtape for Radio Al-Hara during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Imprisoned at home, I was listening to my favorite music all the time, and here is a taste of it. From Rai to rap to folklore to alternative, Arabic and global, these tracks were my remedy. Another passion of mine next to music, is sharing music, so I hope this one helps others feel good”…

Tune in next Saturday, September 4, 2021, to the sixth edition of lumbung calling!

This online conversation focuses on the lumbung value of Sufficiency. Human ambition has led to discoveries in all fields, and has even brought mankind to other planets. The value of sufficiency, on the other hand, seems incredibly outdated today, as thrift and frugality are considered conditions of deprivation. The Pillars of Hercules have been passed long ago, despite the warning “Ne plus ultra” (“nothing further beyond”), which urged sailors and navigators to go no further. The sixth edition of lumbung calling explores the limits of sufficiency: When do we say enough is enough? How can these limits be pushed? Who or what defines them?

With the guests Paula Fleisner and Christopher Cozier, hosted by Jumana Emil Abboud and Mirwan Andan.

lumbung calling: Sufficiency Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 8.30 am (AST), 9.30 am (ART), 2.30 pm (CET), 7.30pm (WIB)

Forum 27an Kenduri Kidung dan Do’a (Celebration of Song and Prayer)

The challenge that we felt most after the passing of Enin, the mother of all of us here, is how to maintain the inclusiveness which is her main heritage in JAF’s main house.

Enin has made sure that the space where we live and carry out our activities (which is her very own home), to be a house that will always accept the goodwill and presence of anyone. Her sincerity has made the house similarly feels like the Earth: a living space for anyone, regardless of differences.

Enin’s kitchen is a barn (lumbung), which cultivates existing resources, and supports anyone who comes, lives, and wants to grow. Isn’t that how a territory should be built? To become a living space that provides a livelihood for anyone, by cultivating their resources and sustaining them together?

The Forum 27an this time coincided with the 40 days since Enin left us. In our tradition, in this kind of moment, the family and the closest relatives of the deceased would gather to feast and pray together.

This time we want to remember her through songs and prayers, to give us strength to continue imagining this Earth or at least Jatiwangi as a space that will always be a home for every being and every hope, to then together keeping it that way.

This Forum 27an will be led by Mukti-Mukti.

Forum 27an is a monthly discussion program held by JAF, and this program is present every 27th. We use the 27an forum to be as a space to discuss the latest concerns raised by the community.

lumbung calling: Transparency Saturday, August 7, 2021 9.30 am (BRT), 2.30 pm (CET), 6.30 pm (BST), 7.30 pm (WIB) In English with translation into International Sign

Guests: Erica Malunguinho, trans-, art-, and Black activist, cultural agitator, and educator Shahidul Alam, photojournalist, teacher and social activist

The fifth lumbung calling focuses on the lumbung value of Transparency. For a community to live together with common values, transparency must be embedded in ways of thinking and behaving. The concept of lumbung is related to collective life, and thus transparency becomes a pivotal element. In lumbung, the notion of transparency is closely linked to trust, which is necessary for holding individuals together in groups. These two values, transparency and trust, remain significant across time and cultures. How do they manifest on a daily basis in different territories and times with their distinct forms? How have they evolved or diminished? How is transparency related to power sharing within a community? This lumbung calling demonstrates how various levels of transparency have a role in determining lumbung values and establishing healthy ecosystems.
